Exercise does more than improve penile blood flow, however. Staying fit keeps a man’s weight under control, may increase his testosterone levels, and boosts his confidence. It can also reduce depression and anxiety. These factors can affect erections as well as other aspects of sexual health.

If your doctor suspects that you may have an underlying condition, however, you might need further tests or a consultation with a specialist. Tests for underlying conditions can include: A physical exam: Your doctor will examine your penis and testicles for signs of abnormalities and will test sensation. Blood tests: Blood tests can show if you may have heart disease, diabetes, low testosterone levels, or other issues. Urine tests: Urinalysis is used to look for signs of diabetes and other health conditions. An ultrasound: A specially trained technician will use a wand-like device (transducer) over the blood vessels that supply the penis to analyze for blood flow issues. A psychological exam: Your doctor may want to evaluate you for depression or other mental illnesses that may cause erectile dysfunction. For instance, before oral phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDESi) like Cialis, Standra, Viagra, Levitra and related medications were introduced, doctors could administer one of only two effective treatments for erectile dysfunction: surgical penile revascularization and implantation of a penile prosthesis.
There are also specific treatments for some of the causes of erectile dysfunction. Men presenting with ED should have consideration for a cardiovascular work-up as significant numbers of these men have occult or asymptomatic heart or vascular disease.
Patients may take tadalafil as needed as with sildenafil, vardenafil, and avanafil, or once a day. It is the only ED oral medication that patients can take daily.
The medicine causes blood vessels to expand, increasing blood flow in the body and to the penis, thus helping patients to get an erection. Invasive surgeries that involve rods and balloons are also available to patients suffering from ED. While these treatments often come with potential side effects, discomfort and a financial burden, some ED patients may see success with them.
Viagra (sildenafil) is usually the first-line therapy for erectile dysfunction in the United States and is available only on prescription. Although Viagra is the most effective medication for men with ED, some may not want to use it or cannot use it due to their side effects or the risk of reactions with other drugs they consume.
