At one time, it was thought that ED only affected older men but it is much more common among younger men than previously believed.
Erectile dysfunction is when you’re unable to get and maintain an erection. If you have trouble with ED every once in a while, it’s probably nothing to worry about. But if it happens frequently, it could be a sign of other health problems.
Individuals suffering from psychogenic ED may benefit from psychotherapy, treatment of the ED, or a combination of the two. Also, medications used to treat psychologic troubles may cause ED; however, it is best to consult with your physician prior to stopping any medications that you are taking. With self-injection, a medication is injected directly into the penis to increase blood flow. It is very effective (about 75 percent to 85 percent) and works whether the nerve that controls erections is intact or not. It can be more costly than oral therapies and results in scarring in 5 percent to 30 percent of users (depending on the drug used). To ensure proper dosing, the first dose is generally administered in the doctor’s office.

Monitoring erections that occur during sleep (nocturnal penile tumescence) can help you and your doctor to understand if the erectile dysfunction is due to psychological or physical causes. The nocturnal penile tumescence test is a study to evaluate erections at night. Normally men have three to five erections per eight hours of sleep. The test can be performed at home or in a sleep lab. The most accurate way to perform the test involves a special device that is connected to two rings. The rings are placed around the penis, one at the tip of the penis and the other at the bottom (base) of the penis. The device records how many erections occur, how long they last, and how rigid they are. The test is limited in that it does not assess the ability to penetrate.
By making some of the changes mentioned above, it is possible to enhance general health, and decrease the chance of developing the conditions which are known to cause ED; including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. By achieving a good level of health, the risk of needing medicine which has the potential to cause ED as one of its side effects can also be reduced.
